lyrics
Originally only supposed to be a working title, Bad Brains is a reduction of a multi part big band composition for the MK Groove Orchestra, that was re-worked on the road with the trio version of the band MK3 and then refracted through my compositional language into a stand alone composition as an homage to the dub stylings of Lee Scratch Perry and King Tubby etc. If you listen closely, the melody mirror's Perry's Black Board Jungle. Mixing engineer Abe Seiferth (he's recorded and mixed a lot of people, Yeasayer, etc. Space Bar Studios_ lovingly helped me achieve the reverb/delay drenched style the track needed. The big band arrangement calls the style dub core as I wanted a slightly more aggressive feel. At the time I was listening to a lot of Bad Brains and NYC No Wave circa 1980's like the Contortions and the Brian Eno No Wave Comp No New York, which inspired in part another composition which made it into the MKGO repertoire. I just love Mark's style! He is old school and nu school at the same time. His tunes make you feel so good. I became a fan when I discovered Church. Just bought another one of his albums, not found here, called "Renegades", Grabbed it on eBay. Rob O.
Yup, funk! Gorgeous album, every track a winner. There's a degree of Ill Considered in the sound, so if you like them, definitely check this out. Peter Jones
